Do deities choose us, or do we choose deities?
Personal experiences from practice Sara Witchh.
We often ask ourselves: do we decide which deities and forces we want to work with, or do they decide on us?
My years of experience and practice have shown me one thing unequivocally: deities choose us, not the other way around.
You can try to establish a relationship with a chosen deity, asking for support in a specific area, but if there is no natural thread of understanding between you, you will quickly hit a wall.
How to recognize that a deity has not chosen you? (Working with the "wall" and "concrete")
When you try to work with a deity who is not interested in you or with whom you do not resonate energetically, the relationship feels like a struggle.
Lack of magic: You don't feel any magic in your life at all. Lack of support: You have the impression that your requests aren't reaching anyone.
The feeling of concrete: Even if you turn to a deity responsible for the exact matters you need, working with them feels rigid, heavy, and dead.
It's as if you collided with concrete—there is no fluidity, depth, or any spiritual dimension in it.
When a deity chooses you: True magic and guidance
The situation looks completely different when a deity reaches out to you. Then the relationship takes on a completely different dynamic:
Deep connection: You begin to feel the presence of this force in your daily life.
Signs and guidance: You receive signals, information, and real support in everyday and spiritual matters.
True magic: Incredible agency appears, along with the feeling that you are being led by the hand.
In my case, Hekate is the perfect example. I feel her in my life every day—
she guides me, gives signs, supports me, and gives my practice a deep, transformative meaning.
The case of deities like Mammon:
Energy based on potential
Some deities or energies require specific predispositions from us. Take Mammon as an example.
From my experience, Mammon will not come to just anyone simply because we happen to express such a wish.
The requirement of entrepreneurship:
He will not invest his energy in a person who lacks the appropriate potential.
He will come to someone who is proactive, entrepreneurial, and has a real capacity to build a business, money, and new opportunities.
Investment in potential:
This is an energy that seeks a partner capable of multiplying gifts and translating them into reality.
If you lack this energy of action, this relationship simply won't work.
Summary
My practice proves that the spiritual path is not a supermarket where we can freely pick and choose deities according to our whims.
It is a relationship based on mutual resonance, energetic matching, and a choice made "from above."
When you encounter a deity that has chosen you, all the work becomes natural, fluid, and full of true magic.
When you try to work with a deity who is not interested in you or with whom you do not resonate energetically, the relationship feels like a struggle.

When the spirits turn against you —
your magic will stop working in your favor.
More and more often, I see people on social media burying paraffin wax, intention jars, glass, or wax-covered objects in the ground after rituals.
The explanation?
“There is still ritual energy inside them, so I return it to Mother Earth.”
No.
Mother Earth is not a dumping ground for the remains of our rituals.
Especially if you are a witch who works with nature spirits, plant spirits, and the elements, you should understand that respect for the environment is one of the foundations of such a practice.
In many Wiccan and nature-based practices, great importance is placed on leaving the ritual space exactly as you found it.
If you use fallen sticks or stones, put them back afterward.
You don’t even need to pick a leaf from a tree when you can use one that has already fallen.
🌿 You enter nature as a guest.
Now imagine this:
Your body and your spirit are separate.
Someone regularly comes along and “feeds” your body glass, paraffin wax, and rubbish.
Your spirit stands beside you and watches.
What do you think?
Will your spirit favor that person?
Or will it want them to stop?
That is how I personally understand our relationship with the spirits of nature.
If you ask the spirits of the Earth, plants, forests, or elements for help and then leave waste in their space, don’t expect their favor at the same time.
🔥 AND THIS IS SOMETHING BEGINNER WITCHES ARE NOT TOLD OFTEN ENOUGH:
THERE CAN BE A PRICE TO PAY FOR INCORRECT MAGICAL PRACTICE.
Good intentions do not always correct ignorance.
To me, magic is a little like tax law.
Nobody asks afterward:
“Did you know that rule existed?”
The rules exist whether you know them or not. And if you don’t know them, consequences can still follow.
I look at magical practice in the same way.
I have watched people practice for years, only to completely turn away from magic when their lives began to fall apart, sometimes returning to religion.
They may believe that magic harmed them.
I interpret it differently.
If someone believes in spirits but spends years working with them without respect, they may eventually experience their own practice as something that works against them rather than for them.
That is why, before working with spirits, learn respect, responsibility, and the principles of your practice.
If your ritual leaves you with clean water and safe, natural herbs, you can symbolically return them to the Earth, provided those plants and materials are safe for that particular environment.
You can say:
“Mother Earth, I return to you what comes from nature.
Accept my gratitude and my intention.”
But:
Jars — take them with you.
Paraffin wax — take it with you.
Plastic — take it with you.
Glass — take it with you.
🖤 Do not bury something simply because you used it in a ritual.
Being part of a magical ritual does not stop an object from being waste.
🌿 Respect for Mother Earth does not end with the words spoken during a ritual. It is most visible in what you leave behind.
Go back and remove what you buried.
Clean the place. If appropriate for that location, restore or care for the disturbed ground.
If it is meaningful within your spiritual practice, apologize to the spirits and ask for forgiveness.
Then start giving something positive back.
You can care for nature, pick up litter, support wildlife responsibly, or put up a suitable bird feeder and feed birds appropriately.
Do something good for Mother Earth instead of leaving something behind that can harm her.
And I genuinely have to ask:
How can someone walk into a forest and think that burying glass jars there is a good idea?
Or another example I recently saw:
“I bury paraffin wax out of respect for the ritual energy.”
People… seriously?
What concerns me even more is when someone records a post about it and confidently teaches thousands of other people that this is how it should be done.
Meanwhile, in my spiritual understanding, Mother Gaia is watching and boiling with anger.
The spirits of the Earth.
The spirits of the forest.
The spirits of the elements.
How exactly is Mother Earth supposed to “accept” a glass jar or paraffin wax?
And there is something I would genuinely like to know:
Where did these practices even come from? Who started teaching witches that burying glass and paraffin in nature is an offering to the Earth?
🌿 Respect the Earth you ask to work with you.
The explanation?

Rare and ever-changing,
green eyes have been surrounded by an aura of mystery for centuries.
In literature, and modern spirituality, green eyes are still associated with mystery, intuition, independence, nature,
and something difficult to decipher.
A witch’s green eyes were like the eyes of nature itself – beautiful, wild, and impossible to fully tame.
Perhaps that is why they fit the image of a witch so perfectly.
In old tales, green eyes were sometimes described as the gaze of a woman who knows more, feels more deeply, and sees what others cannot.
In magical symbolism, the colour green became associated with the earth, healing, intuition, wild nature, and knowledge drawn from the natural world.
Green has always belonged to nature. It is the colour of trees, leaves, grass, and herbs.
In magical imagery, green therefore became much more than just a colour. It was a symbol of a deep connection with the living earth.
What Traits Were Associated with Witches?
Over time, folklore created an entire catalogue of signs by which a woman who practised magic could supposedly be recognised. These beliefs varied depending on the place and period, but certain characteristics appeared repeatedly:
unusual or piercing eyes, believed to have the power to cast a spell or enchant others, birthmarks, moles, and scars, sometimes interpreted as mysterious signs. Auburn-brown, very dark, or exceptionally long hair. Knowledge of herbs, roots, mushrooms, and natural healing methods,
living alone or on the outskirts of society,
Independence and an unwillingness to conform to the expectations of others.
The presence of animals, particularly cats, owls, ravens, or toads, which folklore often associated with magic. An interest in dreams, prophecies, the moon, and changes occurring in nature.
Healing abilities, which some considered a gift while others viewed them with suspicion.
Perhaps that is why they fit the image of a witch so perfectly.

Her eyes are said to be the first sign. Green, grey, or changing their shade depending on the light. According to legend, a witch’s gaze was piercing — as though she could see not only the person standing before her, but also everything they were trying to hide.
A witch could also be recognised by her unusual connection with nature. The forest never felt foreign to her. She was drawn to ancient trees, herbs, stones, the night sky, and the light of the moon. She was believed to instinctively sense an approaching storm, recognise plants, and notice changes in nature long before anyone else did.
It was also believed that animals behaved differently around her. Cats, ravens, owls, and other wild creatures did not fear her, as though they sensed something familiar in her presence.
